All that really matters...

Postby Wind In My Hair » Fri, 21 Jul 2006 1:05 am

... is that the people we love know we love them

... is for us to look back on our life with no regrets

... is a child's trusting face looking up into yours

... is to hear a child say "I love you"

... is to be there for your parents when they need you

... is to forgive your spouse the unforgiveable wrong

... is to look yourself in the mirror everyday and like the person you see

... is to be a better person today than we were yesterday

... is to live each day in such a way that we are ready to die that night

what really matters to you?

Getting to the bar on time and pulling a really good looking chick.

Earning a lot of money is good as well.

That's really beautiful WIMH, although I may need to work on myself on a couple you mentioned!

SMS, yes it was an insomniac sentimental mushy what-is-life-all-about moment. im a little like cinderella in that regard - i turn into a woose after midnight! oh ya, the heartbreak didn't help.

GC, thanks. i have to work on all of them every single day. [-o<

And just to add:

There are only two judgments worth making: Is it wise and, is it useful.

And only one way to view life: Life is unfolding exactly the way it should be unfolding.

That sounds like something Deepak Chopra would say too.

It's the only way to find joy in life everyday. Otherwise, one looks back with sadness at what could have been (as though it didn't unfold exactly as it should have), and one looks forward to the unknown with fear and worry, looking for control and security, both of which are truly illusions in life.

Well said, SE. what you wrote has echoes of Desiderata, though i don't know who wrote that: "whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should."

it's a beautiful and wise poem. some lines in particular have helped me form my life principles. here's the whole text:

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labours and aspiration, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.
