hope it is not too late to recommend something to you...

one word: Linux

one recommendation: www.ubuntu.com

it comes with FW and so far you wont need anti-virus/spyware/adware

Anybody tried (with open minded and suppressed scepticism :D) the IE7 beta and WinDefender? Any comments?

they are not stable ... avast and AVG and Nod 32 ... most prefered

What do you mean "is not stable"?
