AVG rocks!

Imho, for long-term spyware/adware fix, dump Internet Explorer and go Firefox.

Adware and spyware aren't the same thing. Adware get rid of the pop-up banners that are generated due to your surfing preferences and spyware tends to send somebody personal information about yourself, i.e., keystroke loggers, bank accounts numbers, passwords and the like.

It is better to have a bit more than you need rather than a bit less. Forewarned is forearmed.

And Firefox is not secure either but moreso than windoze. I am also a firm believer of firefox. Currently using Firefox/1.5.0.4. Love the tabbed browsing with 5 expat forums for homepages!

Plus, being able to open links in a new tab by just clicking on them with the middel mouse button is sooooooo convenient for forums and news sites.

Not computer smart, but as I'm on a ibook, would I need to install all or any of the above items to protect my notebook? Or these for PC only? Thanks.

PC only. nobody cares enough about macs to bother to write spyware for them. ;)

When in doubt try both. Everybody has their preferences based on their own surfing habits. If you are inclined to click on banners and whatnot out of curiosity then the more the better. Another option that I have used in the past is the HOST file.

If you want a good place to start I would suggest some reading at mpvs.org Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites

There are quite a few good pages/topics here that you may want to bookmark.
