Post by cphipps » Wed, 07 Jun 2006 8:31 pm

I am a graphic design, visual arts professional and I'm in the process of starting up a company. (Advertising, Marketing, Graphic Design, Art, Photography + Print & Web design)

Please share your ideas, or comments if you have insights about being an expat and starting a business in this field in Singapore.

Thanks for your response. You are the first to do so. It must be a good thing. Your skills sound interesting. In the visual communication field, you play an important role. There is potential if we can determine that there is market demand for this type of thing in Singapore.

Starting a company is like forming the crew of a ship before it sets sail. Ultimately it will mean taking a journey together. If the team works well together, they can operate a bigger boat and sail further and explore many more interesting places.

Generally, I’m interested in looking to meet people in the creative fields and also in areas that can support business, like marketing specialists, people with business development experience and account representatives to join in a network. Most important is the ability to attract clients.

What is the best way that you have found to build a reliable client base in Singapore? Are most clients here interested in one time project oriented work? Also, I’m looking for advice on starting a business in Singapore? To me, Singapore seems like it is multinational, multicultural market. Any potential to work on projects for international companies? Are local companies interested in investing in branding or advertising?

hmm.. it seems the topic starter has left..

we're a packaging design agency operating from HK but working with designers from NYC, the UK and Europe and AUS.

I would be interested to get to know anyone that would be interested in freelancing locally for us, and alternatively if anyone is interested in someone with business development skills and project management skills to launch in Singapore (commission based at this stage).

Should anyone be interested email me at kontkikker AT hotmail or pm me

Well, interesting I have quit the same plan, only that I work in the 3D-Animation, Visualization business. Well, call it Illustration then...
Singapore is very good base to work for clients abroad. You can deliver work to them in the morning in europe or on the next day in US.
Anyhow, I wouldn't focus on the local market here. There is not much work and people are not very good paid in this area. Singapore is just a town and it produce not much. So, a campaign is not focused on many people, therefor not paid to good.
If you have abroad clients you can make nearly 2-3 times the money you get here, plus the fact that your hired artist cost less. Minus the fact that it's hard to get local artist and a company can't employ many expats.
So, if you form up a company and work with freelancers, you probably have a good start, anyhow don't underestimed the costs. Office is quit expensive and there are many restrictions in law you have to face. Singapore goverment wants to have big companies that makes a lot cash, not small professionals (Sometimes I think so).

guess that depends what clients you're targeting.. for us it's not so much of a problem, it's more an issue of finding the right people..
