Are land owners racist to Indians while renting flats...why should any one have a problem if he pays on rent time and keeps the property clean ?

I was going to try to answer this but no matter how I wrote it or rephrased it I couldn't get it so sound right and I do not want to invite the wrath of everybody for misinterpreting what I am trying to say.

No they are not racist but I'll leave it at "Once Burned, Twice Shy"

Yeah, you're doing it because you've been in Singapore too long. It's a touchy subject, but how about we try to have a civil discussion before we go into lockdown?

So to answer the original question, yes, there are landlords who won't rent to Indians. However, you're unlikely to encounter them, because they'll often make their preferences clear to the agent beforehand. Paying on time and keeping the place clean isn't the issue, because the racist ones have no intention of finding out whether you can and will.

I will answer this one because I am an Indian and its easy for me to relate and if someone wants to brick bat makes it easier to return the balls :D

Firstly, yes! Landlords do refuse to rent to Indians and yes! they have a very good reason which unfortunately is not that far away from truth. We, the enterprising Indians, always look for a good bargain. So we are not averse to sharing the apartment. But when we are in the early stages of our career, we will share with more a few people but just neglect to tell the landlord that his three bedroom apartment will be a living quarters for 5 people. It takes a toll on the house built for a small family unit to have 5 fully grown Indian dudes! :D :D

And hence "one bitten, twice shy". But this is predominantly in HDB and to certain extent private apartments. And not that prevalent in condo's or other housing types.

To wit, my current landlord, actually sent his wife one day 3 years ago to check if I was hoarding people in the house. Despite the fact he rented the place to me, he was not convinced. Hence the inspection. I was not there and my ex flatmate (the only one) entertained the wife. After which the dude offered his apologies as I protested his wifes visit. But today its all water under the bridge. Every year I get a card for CNY and this year he sent me a voucher for aircon cleaning which is worth 400$. Now, that is a good landlord.
