Laser Treatment for Spider Veins

Post by SMW » Wed, 24 May 2006 12:52 pm

I have spider veins on my legs - not a lot, but just enough to bother me. I had them treated with injections a few years ago, but it barely changed them. Can anyone recommend a good place in Singapore that offers laser removal of spider veins?

Hi SMW. My name is Dan, and I am editor of a cosmetic surgery magazine distributed in Malaysia and Singapore. From what I've heard, there are a multitude of places to get laser treatment in Singapore. In my view, the main thing that you would want to keep in mind when shopping around is to opt for a fully-qualified specialist doctor -- such as a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist who has training in lasers used to remove vascular lesions. With literally dozens of different types of lasers out there, it's good to rely on the expertise of these professionals when it comes to selecting the best one and using it in a way that is both safe and effective. Might want to check the membership registry of the Singapore Association of Plastic Surgeons, Singapore Society of Cosmetic (Aesthetic) Surgery, and the Dermatological Society of Singapore (all ordinary members are accredited dermatologists). Whatever you choose to do, make sure there's an expert at the other end of the laser. Hope this helps!

Thanks, Dan. I'll have a look into that. Have you heard of any problems, in general, with laser treatment of spider veins?

Hey there SMW. From what I understand, the possible risks and side effects for laser treatment of spider veins are roughly the same as those for any other kind of treatment that uses a laser. So on the low end of the spectrum, you might be looking at some pain during treatment (Once for an article I actually went to a dermatologist to get hit with a laser to see how much it hurt -- took a couple of shots to the face, and it stung a bit, but not so bad :D ), along with some redness and possible tenderness on the treatment area.

However, if you're talking about the realm of all possible risks, skin injuries, burns and scarring can occur if the laser is poorly wielded. This is why it's so important to find a treatment professional who: 1) has a good working knowledge of how a laser affects the skin and other tissues; 2) has a great deal of experience working with lasers; and 3) knows which laser should be used for each particular situation (in your case, spider veins). A conscientious practitioner will also make sure you are completely aware of all of the possible side effects and risks before they even pick up the laser to begin treatment.

Sorry if I rambled on... hope that helps a bit to answer your question!

You definitely need to go to a specialist. I had varicose veins as well as tons of fine spider veins covering both my legs. I had my spider veins treated using vein wave. It's very effective and you actually see your spider veins disappear in front of your very eyes. I had my legs treated at mt alvernia hospital by a very nice vascular surgeon, Dr Cosmas Chen. As a vascular surgeon, the treatment of veins is his specialty. He is also able to offer a wide spectrum of different methods used . I think he is really versatile. You should check him out. No is 62556586

Would like to second the great advice from guest -- vascular surgeons are often among the most knowledgeable experts when it comes to using lasers to get rid of spider veins and other unsightly vein issues. :)
