District 12?

Post by GordonGekko » Wed, 24 May 2006 3:27 am

Hi guys,

Does anybody know if District 12 is a nice (=safe) area? I was thinking about renting a 1-bedroom condo there.

Singapore is generally a safe place to live in. District 12 is in the areas of Balestier and Moulmein..it's like a food district, and the food stalls are opened at night.

...because Balestier and Moulmein are where Singapore's illegal gambling dens, not a few whorehouses and lots of short-time hotels are located. Even half the lighting shops are run by Ah Bengs, probably as fronts for money laundering. Good food though 8-)

To address the original question, you'd be hard put to find a place in Singapore that is not "safe", but Balestier is hardly upmarket and it's a little inconvenient locationwise too (no MRT). Novena, Newton and Toa Payoh, on the other hand, are all nearby and perhaps better bets.

More apparent in Geylang and Keong Saik Street, not sure about Balestier.

Most definitely have houses of ill repute on Balistier. Used to live not too far away on Jln Merlimau off Thompson Rd. Several years ago one of the condos there was busted for prostitution and Gambling (can't remember the name of the condo though). Will have to agree with JP. Of course the other two places are much more well known due to the size I would guess.
