buying a guitar in Singapore

Post by roamermark » Wed, 17 May 2006 6:25 am

Hi everyone,
First time posting here. My wife and I will be moving to Singapore from Guatemala (at the American School here...Canadian School there) in July. I am a music teacher and just broke my guitar today. Wondering if I should buy a new one here or wait till I get to Singapore. Are there good retailers of musical instruments there....good variety...and ballpark prices.....for those who want to know particulars i am looking to pick up an Ovation Acoustic Electric that retails for about 500-600 US dollars in the states.

Cheers
Mark

Fist off welcome to Singapore! Second of all, I am sure that you will be amazed at the quality, quantity and price of guitars in this country! Loads and Loads of places to go and beautiful quality with very educated and musically talented retailers (i.e. they can play!!). Don't worry about bringing out your old guitar...I'm sure you will have no problem whatsoever finding exactly what you are looking for over here! Once you get out here PM me and I'll send you through the right contacts at the right store for the right gear!

Cheers

I would also recommend Swee Lee. I have actually purchased an Ovation "Custom Legend" acoustic electric there many years ago for my wife when she was still singing professionally, Currently my 16 year old son is using it. I don't think you will pick up one for any less than in the US but I have no reference because I purchased mine 20 years ago.

I found a fantastic guitar shop in JB - think the prices are competitive. It's in Holiday Plaza F-92 and called Kadai Muzik Yong Li the guy was called Steven (H/P 016-761 3303) you could call first and see if he has what you are looking for...
(I'm looking for a guitar teacher for my 12 year old - do you give lessons? E mail me if so - thanks)

I was wrong in my earlier post. I have bought loads of stuff at two places over the past 2 decades. My "Ovation" wasn't bought at Swee Lee but at City Music Pte Ltd. Their address is:

City Music Co Pte Ltd
1 Sophia Road #02-12/13 PEACE CENTRE Singapore 228149

Yup SMS, City Music is the official importer for Ovation guitars. The US-made Ovations should be in the OP's price range. Another place to check out would be the so-called 'guitar paradise' in the basement of Peninsular Shopping Centre. Lots of guitar shops there and totally drool-worthy guitars. Don't bring your credit card...

Davis Guitar - Peninsula hotel, basement. it's next to peninsula plaza.
they're the official distributor of ESP (Metallica) and PRS (Incubus) guitars here in singapore. A lot of famous musicians seem to patrionize the shop too.
