Well, I also have a thing about cow bells. When my mother was a young girl, and they were selling off the bits of her beloved Grandparents farm after their death, she took the only thing that mattered to her. Which if fact, was the only thing her grandfather took with him from his home when he emigrated to America. An old cowbell. Nothing could remind him 'more of home than the sound of that bell' was his reasoning.
In the kitchen, of their house to this day, some 65 years later, hangs the cow bell. Years ago when my mother was asking what from the house I would like (to inherit was what she meant like china, chrystal, etc...): without hesitation I said 'just the cow bell'.
Cowbell also is a reference to one of the funniest Saturday Night Live skits in the last 10 years. If you goople it you'll see many, many references come up. It is used as an expression by those in the know and has become a part of lexicon of American English.
If something is just not right, you need more cow bell.
