WASHINGTON, Feb 28 (IPS) - Concern is brewing among advocacy groups and civil society organisations that monitor the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, a staple of protests during the annual meetings of the two organisations, after Singapore threatened a crackdown on some of their activities.

A number of international civil society groups are drafting a letter to the government of Singapore to dissuade the country from vows that its chief security official made against their activities.

Singapore's Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng had reportedly said that certain civil society actions may "attract severe punishment, including caning and imprisonment" in this southeast Asian country....

Eric from the Netherlands wrote:Indeed an interesting one, the upcoming IMF event. Will we notice the first mass demonstrations in Singapore after its independence in 1965?

On one hand I would really be interested to see how Singapore would handle mass demnostrations and riots, on the other hand it is one of the reasons for liking this country so muc: not these ever annoying demonstrations and hooligans around.

Just don't let those moronic Korean farmers in and all will be fine as the professional protestors from Europe can't afford the fare.

Do people make a living out of this? Or is that how they choose to use their vacation time. Is IMF held in different country each time? If so, not a bad idea to do it this way since you get to visit a country each time :D .

No need to rake your brian over the next vacation destination. Just plan it around the IMF meetings.

Looking forward to it.

Love to see some of these lobby groups cop it hard time and let them know what life is really like. Bring it on.

BTW the guys (n girls) of the SPF are training very hard for the event, extra drills, new equipment, replenished ammo supplies and less then lethal weapons/ammuniton. Should be fun. Maybe go down and have a look see at them in action.

If they think they dissuade the Singaporean Govt from being the Singaporean Govt they have another thing coming lah.
