Should I come to Singapore without a job?

Post by rotovegas » Sat, 29 Apr 2006 4:45 pm

I live in NZ and work in the publishing industry. I've been looking for jobs in Singapore and have had a few bites from prospective employers - but when it comes to interviews, they have seemed surprised I'm not in Singapore, even though my resume says I'm in New Zealand. Is it easier to find work by being in Singapore, having Singapore contact details and such?

Obviously, there are outgoings like airfares, set up costs and the like, and the downtime of not having an income, plus the risk of not gaining employment at all. Is Singapore worth the risk?

Only you can determine that. How are we supposed to know what your background is. Why you want to come. What you hope to gain and/or accomplish. As the old saw goes, you normally have to spend money to make money. If you feel you are saleable enough pack a bag and make the investment. As to whether or not you will be successful. Depends how well you sell yourself.

Good Luck.

hey thanks for your advice. Have lived in taiwan for over 2 years and although it was hard, the lifestlye was worth it! We are keen to live overseas again but this time for a longer period of time. My background is in magazines/newpapers editing, copywrting and production etc.

You should mention in your application letters that you're prepared to come to SG to be interviewed or interview by telephone/webcam. That will alert them to the fact that you are not here, but could be. Chances are, they're just not looking at the address clearly.
