Why restrict the 'Avatar' to around 10kb only, can't give some more space for that

.....
If space is a constraint, why not allow it to be linked with an external url !!?

C'mon "it" can't be that big... Unless you're trying to impress all the ladies and pull them away from Eric and Vaucluse?

Not so much disk space as bandwidth when the page loads.

True, but an external URL wouldn't affect the board's bandwidth...

!!!!

, guess the avatar shouldn't take any increase in bandwidth.. as the size is only 100*100... which is more enough for an avatar.
only the 10kb.. is hitting me

True. However, phpBB does not have a provision for an external avatar... perhaps because of the delay in loading pages that can be caused seeking out secondary URL's for the page load.

Aaah, true. I still had CFBB in mind.
However, considering that most of us are "regular visitors", the initial delay would just be temporary until it's cached. Same can be said of increasing the avatar size to 15kb. In most cases it's a one-time hit.

Yes, you are correct again. There may be some add ons available that would enhance avatar capabilities... but the trouble with phpBB addons is that if you ever have to upgrade the basic board system, they must all be re-applied.
phpBB kind of reminds me of the old Betamax/VHS wars... the best product didn't win out but it is very widely used.

Especially if it's free.
I used to use ColdFusion-based bulletin boards (wrote my own too), and they're pretty darn great to use. But a CF server isn't free, so phpBB makes sense.
