Moving to Singapore

Post by wirby » Mon, 24 Apr 2006 12:53 am

My boyfriend and I have an opportunity to work in Singapore, we are both UK citizens. Is there a community in Singapore where English people mainly live, or are they all spread out. As I have heard that there is. Also which is the most popular place to live in.

Expats are quite scattered on the island. Holland Village is quite popular as is Tanglin area & the East Coast. There is not really an 'English area' as such.

Your first decision about where to live you should consider where you work & how long you want to commute. If the job comes with a car then no real worries, if not you may want to live live an MRT (underground) station, or near a bus route. You may have children & proximity to the school may be a consideration.

After that you may want to think whether you want to live in a condo (apartment block) that comes with a pool, tennis court, jacuzzi etc. Or would you prefer a house that comes with a garden?

I would suggest that, if you can afford it, spend a couple of weeks in a Serviced Apartment so that you can explore & get a feel for the place & view some places before you decide.

Best of luck

Holland Village, what's in a name?

No matter where you live, you will meet Brits and other expat nationalities all around.

On the other hand, it is quite refreshing and interesting to be amongst the locals here as well. Living amongst them though is slightly different.

Choose any condo and you will find the expats around you.

There's about 700,000 of us here in this city, should be sufficient.

Well said, Eric. Living the life is the best way to get to know the country and the people.

And FWIW, it seems to me that those expats who least enjoy themselves here are the ones that remain isolated.
