I really want to go to Penang and would like to hear of others' experience. Also approximate of time and budget needed. How did you get there? coach? hire car? drove etc. Where is a good value place to stay?

I was there abt 3 yrs ago. Took an overnight bus there frm Larkin Terminal in Johor. It's cheaper.

Food: Early morning dim sum at the coffeeshop is good. U can try the roadside indian stall opposite Malaysian Hotel for their good variety of mutton soups and pratas.

Local food is good that's all I can remember!

A friend of mine is having wedding up there on the 7th of May, also trying to see how to get up there.

Currently options are

1. fly , airasia from JB up there...cheap, but you have to figure out in between transport

2. bus 9 - 11 hours coach

3. or take a package, this one sounds pretty good, http://www.transtar.com.sg/touremailpkg.php

Good luck!

You can also fly Singapore-Penang direct. By far the fastest but also the most expensive way to go...

Hola guyz,

I'm born bond bret in Penang. Itz nice place is you like to take a laidback holiday. Itz also not too far away from Langkawi island where you can find cheap boose much cheaper than water. (no kidding). If you're a food lover thiz is da place. Besides the popular hawker stalls and nasi kandar, I would suggest places like the ship and a german restaurant along Batu Ferringi (forgot da name). The people are relatively simillar to Singapore but the social pace is pretty much slower. Take a ride on the Ferry then get back to the mainland by bridge. 3 day stay in penang would be ideal to have a feel of Penang. Cheerz

There are many options to get to Penang.

By Air:
1. You can take a flight from Changi to Penang International Airport. Transfers can be arranged with the hotel you are staying
2. Take a coach from one of the hotel (I believe it is Copthorne Orchid) to Senai Airport in Johor. You need to buy the ticket online (www.airasia.com). The hassle is the transport to and from the airport and Singapore.

By Train:
1. You can take a LONG trip on the usual train (I believe 10-11 hours) but very rewarding. Buy ticket at the train station in Tanjong Pagar.
2. Travel with class on the Oriental Express.

By BUS:
1. Many options. TRANSTAR is one. I am sure there are many more.

By CAR:
1. It is a very nice drive up. Besides, if you have time, you can see KL and Ipoh, on the way. The way up is all on the PLUS Highway, with lay-bys and toilet facilities, as well as restaurants and food stalls. With this, you will have a car in Penang but driving there is another challenge.

When in Penang, you have a wide choice of accomodation.

1. Batu Ferringhi
A hot favourite with tourist. You have the Mutiara Hotel, Golden Sands, Rasa Sayang (once a top 10 hotel in the world), Batu Ferringhi Beach Hotel etc.

2. Town
Shangri-La or Northam Hotel. Also the legendary E&O Hotel. Many more.

3. Outskirts
Equitorial Hotel

Where to eat?

Penang is a food haven.

Do not miss the Nasi Kandar, Penang laksa (you may want to go light on the prawn paste), char kway teow (fried broad noodles), chendol, chee cheong fun (with curry sauce), Sister's yam cake etc. Ask the concierge and they will be able to tell you. also try End-of-the-world and Eden for seafood if you are in the Batu Ferringhi area.

Sight seeing:
1. Penang Hill - a breath taking view of the city
2. Buddhist temples
3. Snake temple
4. Butterfly Farm
5. Botanical Garden

These may help:

Would suggest you keep your expectations low and enjoy ur trip.
Should you need tipz on eccentric spots juz PM me okey ;)
Most low budget travellers tend to flock around city center while high end travellerz tend to flock around Batu Ferringi.

Not bad an idea too...JB-PEN via Airasia is cheaper than SG-PEN.
There is only one flight at 1035am from Senai everyday via Airasia.

Also note that the airport is in Johor is in Senai which is about 40mins drive fr Johor. I suggest you take a shuttle bus service straight to the airport from the City Square mall in JB otherwise if ur more adventurous try the Larkin terminal or the local cab!
