summer school

Post by Humid » Fri, 10 Mar 2006 8:27 pm

Hi,

I am visiting with my son 5 year old for 3 weeks during summer, please does anyone has experience on summer school in Singapore?

My boy is British and has been attending the British school in Tokyo, it would be helpful if I can gather more informations before enroling him.

Many thanks in advance for all suggestions. Accomodations wise we will be located centrally therefore anywhere near Orcahrd, Tanjong Pagar, Bt Timah would be easily accessible.

Ciao,
T Battista

I may be wrong, but I would assume that your child would need to be enrolled in the school in order to attend summer school. I would check either the school's web sites or ring them up to ask about their policy.
Good luck.

Not too sure about summer school, but there are lots of opportunities for kids during the summer. You can contact the Tanglin Trust School or OFS and ask them specifically for recommendations and also check out:

Summer School

Post by june_faerie » Tue, 14 Mar 2006 3:23 am

Hi, I do not think if there is any summer school except perhaps in those International Schools. Perhaps you may like to ring them up to find out more. However, if you would like your son to join our local education system, you may choose from various private education centres. I may be able to recommend if this is what you want.

Oh my gosh! I just reread the original post. Five years old??? 5? You want to put your five year old in summer school? To learn what exactly? He belongs at home with his Mom & Dad, or at the playground with friends or may be a trip to the zoo. Not in summer school, some would argue that at 5 he's not ready for any school at all. What an appaulling concept that is... Good lord -- what next? Tutoting in colors and shapes?

several International Schools have summer programs for kids. Try contacting ISS, OFS, Canadian school among others. I believe their programs are open to children who do not normally attend the schools. Spartacus Camps is not school-based but is a lot of fun and well-supervised be ex-teachers. There are also various half-day Little League football programs run on school premises if he likes soccer. Singapore has loads of activities to offer kids outside school programs and you shouldn't have any trouble finding things for him to do for 3 weeks. He is too young for most of the residential camps in Loola and Malaysia which are listed above.

Mandarin Classes 2x a week

Post by yeeyee » Sat, 13 May 2006 7:15 am

A friend of mine will be coming over to Singapore for a month with their 4 year old. They would like their daughter to brush up her mandarin skils. Any idea which schools would accept to take in a child for just a month, perhaps 2-3x a week an hour each time? She would also like her child to learn through play and interaction besides just sitting in a classroom and staring at a board.

Dude, that was 2 months ago... You'd think for someone who works in a bell tower you'd have a better sense of timing!

Aha - I didn't even notice that when I replied, but still, we haven't had summer yet..........or whatever it is that changes to signify summer has arrived here (never really sussed out why they call it summer here, 'middle of the year' would be more appropriate).

Just a remnant of colonial oppression. I still don't think a 3 year old and a five year old belong in summer school. Or 'middle of the year' school.

yeah i think you would find that for 5 year olds summer 'school' is just another name for playgroup but because it's at a school it takes that name. i know plenty of children who at that age would like to be with other children taking part in activities such as painting, craft, music and games. or yeah...maybe they'd prefer to go to a different shopping mall or outdoor playground everyday in Singapore.
