NEGOTIATE WITH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL??

Post by kashu » Fri, 03 Mar 2006 5:20 pm

I will be moving to Singapore next month. I have three kids age 7, 5 &, 4. Can someone tell me if International Schools in Singapore reduce fees considering three siblings getting admission. Can I negotiate with them? Is it appropriate to negotiate?? Can someone please inform me the most affordable international English school in Singapore. Would Appreciate it!
Thanx. KASHU

Not wise to negotiate on matters pertaining to education for your children. You're not buying fish in the market. :(

As far as I know, the fees are all very straight forward. If there is neotiation to be done, it is with the company you work for, and for your resettlement or expat 'package.'

With three children, many will give a discount (EtonHouse, AISS, ISS and I believe maybe UWC as well - though not sure), but this will only apply to your third child. In other words, you will still have to pay full price for your first two children. And the discount will not be much - perhaps 10-20% off.

The Canadian school will negotiate on fees, apparently. It is totally at their discretion and will be taken on a case-by-case basis (income details need to be provided).

Icelady: I think that costs are a very relevant point when we are talking about sums that are in excess of $45,000 a year - which is EASILY what the OP would be faced with for three children. More and more people are here without companies paying out for schooling, and schools know this.

To be honest, with your younger children, I would look for a local-based kindergarten. Kindy's go up to the year a child turns 6. There are lots here that are run by expats and are staffed by expats, so they are very multi-cultural and yet, not too much of a culture shock for your kids. They are often significantly cheaper than International Schools too.

Why not contact the admissions people through their websites? That's the best place to start...

Negotiate school fees...

Hello friend,
I am very familiar with International Community School (ICS) and I know they have published web site rates. Since you have a 4 yr old, you have the option of a full day or half day program. Instruction for 3 yr olds will begin in the fall, too. Therefore, with pre-schoolers you get to choose from 2 different fees. ICS does have exceptions to the rule, and do generously consider the financial needs of families and try not to turn away anyone because of financial constraints. I'd say ...yes...do ask and maybe there will be some allowance. You will probably have to explain your situation...why do you need reduced tuition? etc...and you can be sure that you will be listened to and given much consideration per your request. Each family is treated as unique and special...let them hear from you. ICS wants to help you, if possible. Sometimes there are jobs available at school that need filling. Possibly you can work half day in the office, in exchange for some tuition assistance. Ask them about possibilities. They are often available! Contact Florence Tan at the school for more info. :D
