I am about to move to Singapore from Australia on my own with a 5 (almost 6) year old child. I currently work from home in my own business and intend to continue to do so. Because my work requires a lot of travel and I need to take my child with me (don't want a Home Alone scenario, right?) , I have been homeschooling my child for the past year using a mix of various curricula, coupled with some private tutors (for stuff I can't manage!) and also classes with other kids (eg sports, dance, music etc) so my child gets as much social interaction as possible given our circumstances.
I am trying to decide whether to continue homeschooling after we move to Singapore or whether to enrol my child in a school. This will be more of an option in Singapore as I won't have to travel as much as before, but we have grown to really love homeschooling and it seems to be working really well for us so I am undecided. (She is very gregarious, independent and has no problem meeting and engaging peers, so I am not concerned about socialisation). One issue that I am not sure about is how my child will be placed in terms of grade or class level. She is currently reading at about an Aussie grade 4 level, and is probably at a grade 3 or 4 level in maths (eg dividing 6 digit numbers, mastered multiplication etc) and I am not sure how this corresponds with the Singapore system? Given that she will be turning 6 around the middle of this year, what grade would she be likely to be placed in if I enrol her in an International School in Singapore, and would the schools take into account her current level of work or will grade placement be solely aged-based?
Any advice is gratefully received.
