Post by dancingbaby » Tue, 27 Dec 2005 1:00 pm

Hi,

Am planning for a holiday in greece. Any suggestions on which is the best time to visit and which travel agents are giving a good deal.

Thanks in advance

I wouldn't go in the summer (July, August) - too many tourists. I can recommend Athens - much to see and a short journey away to the port of Piraeus where you can catch a ferry to several beautiful islands. Can't help with the travel agent though...

May and June are probably the best months to go, as it is late spring and the temperatures will be more comfortable than in July and August summer. Also, since it gets that hot and sunny in Greece in summer, spring is more colorful, as all flowers and blossom will be abundant. In summer everything will be yellow, cause it is burnt.

Spring will have temperatures between 25 to 30 degrees celsius, whereas in summer it easily gets more than 40 degrees, and it is NOT comfortable...

Places to visit: Athens (2 or 3 days should be enough, visit the Plaka area and of course walk up the Acropolis), The islands (Santorini the most beautiful one, Mykonos for partying, Paros, Ios, Naxos for nature and local life), go to The Peloponnessos (peninsula, west of Athens) with beautiful ancient ruins of Epidaurus, Nafplio, Corinth, Olympia and Mycaene. If you have time, go visit the amazing landscape up the mountains of Lakonia region.

Book a ticket and arrange travel over there in Greece itself, there's thousands of cheap and good agents all around Athens Plaka neighbourhood, far cheaper.

Enjoy!

Eric

you should try do the small peloponesso track. very nice. and can be done in 2 days with the bus doing stops along the cities.

try to visit aarvdark. very cool small town on the way to the Delphi temple (which BTW you should go visit) and micenae.

if time permits (and money), visit Mikonos island, rent a small motorcicle to drive around:)

visit the Neptune Temple. stay for sunset, incredible view.

try not to go in january or february...cooooold, winddddy!! :)

a lot of tourist buses leave from the syntagma subway station, so I suggest you to find a place to stay near Plaka area. saves you money and time around Athens.

have fun and bring some olive oil :)
