Hi - NYer visiting Singapore next week...

Post by Ali » Tue, 27 Dec 2005 10:05 am

Hey all.
I'm going to Singapore next week for a Feng Shui seminar and will be there for 10 days.
I'm travelling by myself and looking to have a little fun and meet some people while I am there. Anyone have any suggestions for me??
I really appreciate any help.

Do you Salsa?
If you do, check out Union Square at Amara Hotel Shopping Centre
http://www.ntucclub.com/clubs/index.asp?add=true

and the other salsa joints listed under
the Calendar section of http://go.to/salsainsingapore
or
http://www.salsapower.com/cities/singapore.htm

Or you could join in the regular board social, the Wed Nite Drinking Club (WNDC) normally posted on http://www.singaporeexpats.com/forum/forum34

Ali,

I am an ex-New Yorker myself now stationed in Sing. There are several nice bars on Emerald Hill off off of Orchard that are worth stopping by. You will also see some threads on this site if you search a little (favorite bars) that list other bars such as Bar None that have good live music - but it really does depend on ones taste. I can never attend the WNDC (wed night drinking club) as i have a work committment every wed night - but it would probably be worth stopping by.

One question for you? What does Ali stand for? also - where in the city you from? I lived on west 82nd for many years and usually get nostalgic around the Thanksgiving Day parade and Christmas. The rest of time happy to be here.

Thanks!!

Hey Wham -
Ali stands for Alessandra.
I currently live in Chelsea on W. 20th, but I lived on the Upper West Side for 10 years and grew up in Brooklyn.
I think that if I ever did leave NYC, I would NOT miss NY during Thanksgiving & Christmas LOL. The crowds are a bit much lately. Did you hear about the transit strike last week? OMG, 3 days of complete TORTURE. There was no getting around the city. I drove from my house to W 86 & Broadway took NINETY minutes!!! Crazy.

How long have you been in Sing?

Anyhow I will try the places suggested and would love any other suggestions about food, shopping, etc. I do not want the type of shopping easily found in NYC...I want different.

I am nervous and excited about going to Sing and any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

Thanks to all.

Hi Ali,

DO visit us at the wed nite drinkin, look at the events, gathering section of this forum and see where it will be. It is a nice opportunity to meet people and all of us could give you a zillion suggestions where to go for your shopping or food or anything else.

If you're open to it, Singapore is food heaven, there is no place on earth with this much variety of excellent, cheap food around. be it the hawkercentres or foodcourts or the local or international restaurants, it's all here on this little tropical island. :)

Shopping? well.... there is 'some' shops around here I do believe... :o

So just touch down and get right into this city!

One of the reasons I am looking forward to Singapore is because eating is definately my favorite thing to do...

BTW - the Sheile painting you have in your siggy is truly one of my favorite paintings. I have it hanging in my bedroom.
