Sorry, have to jump in here. Been to Malaysia on my own, painting, writing etc, and I have to say that I have been greeted with nothing but friendliness....

Does this mean I'm an old dog no one would want to have fun and games with? Perhaps, but I think not. Malay folk are gorgeous, so friendly, and yes, course the local men are nice looking and totally just like any bloke anywhere.....you've just got to be sensible.

There'll always be a chance ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD you could get into trouble as a woman...or a man, come to that, but to be honest, Malaysia, and Singapore feel safer than most places to me....

Mind you, wouldn't walk downtown KL at three am round backstreets near big clubs...alone....I mean....WOULD YOU? Just be sensible.

used to go diving in malaysia, and yes some of the local men do hit on female holiday makers. apparently women from a particular country (which shall remain unnamed) are notorious for holidaying alone and seeking out one night stands with their dive instructors. so perhaps the groping and so on are to suss out the more receptive women...

other than that it's no different than many other countries, including singapore. there are crooks everywhere as bubbs said, just use common sense to stay safe. malaysia is a beautiful country and it would be silly to stop going just cos of some horny guys (now was that a tautology? )

I find it a little curious how this thread started with 'pointing a finger' at local men. Although in the case of these islands most of the posters here are in no doubt it is a largely fictitious story. No doubt this sort of thing or similar happens from time to time anywhere. However, it is not just the men, in every city I have been in so far, if I have not been approached by pimps I have by prostitutes including Singapore and London, the only exception being Tokyo. WIMH your post makes more sense of what is more likely to be going on.
