How close and easy to Bali/Thailand etc

How close and easy to Bali/Thailand etc

Post by gillandloz » Sun, 04 Dec 2005 6:13 am

Been reading the messages posted on here and they are all so helpful. I am looking to move to Sing early next year with my partner, but wanted to know how easy/cheap it was to go to places like Malaysia/Bali/Thailand/Maldives. Its one of our big motivators for upping sticks from London and leaving (apart from the wonderful things we have heard, and since read on here). We will be moving as workers so not travelling but do ex-pats really go to these places for weekend breaks? If so how easy is it and how expensive?

It is quite easy and fast to go to Thailand, Indonesia or Malaysia for weekends. As for the costs, you can now have very good deals with low cost airlines (for example 15 Euros to Thailand). However such deals are not available every week and subject to conditions. A normal fare (return ticket) will be around 100 Euros or above.

As for hotels they are cheaper than in Europe. Of course it depends on what quality and service you expect, but you can get some very good accomodation for 50 euros per night. Cheaper is possible.

Hope this helps.

Travel with in the region, as an advantage of living in Singapore, is a something we can all agree on! There are so many great destinations within a short, direct plane ride. And usually accomodations to fit every budget. Not just expats travel this way, Singaporeans as well. I wouldn't put the Maldives in the 'weekend destination' category, travelling west from Singapore usualy means an awful redeye. Better to stretch that one out for a few more days.

You find travelling towards West difficult? I always experience the opposite... (returning FROM West of Singapore is difficult, not so?)

Honestly, I don't do it that often, unless you count the long haul to Europe/US. Have you taken that SQ flight to the Maldives or Dehli? It's beastly.

Dehli no but Mumbai yes, many times. Going there is OK. Coming back is no fun!

Yes, yes.. It's the return. Definitely crimps the weekend away, that 4 or 5 hour red-eye.
