Citizenship????

Post by Agarwal » Thu, 01 Dec 2005 6:35 pm

Hey All,

My wife and I are both Indian citizens. My wife is pregnant and will be having our child in Singapore. What will be the status of that child? Automatic Indian citizenship (or Sing. citizenship). can we get Singap citizenship for our child. And which Medical insurane company gives maternity benefits also.

thanks & regards

Insurance for Pregnancy

:P Hi there ,first of all ,Congrats on your wife's pregnancy.

In regards to the citizenship, from what I heard is that if you are not a PR here. then its quite difficult to get a Singaporean citizenship.

Also, you are lucky! I subscribe to the Motherhood magazine, and just received my December issue in which it states all about the Medical Insurance on pregnancy..here it goes..

1) AIA www.aia.com.sg 1800 248 8000

2) Great Eastern Life www.lifeisgreat.com.sg 1800 248 8888

3) Ntuc Income www.income.coop

Hope that helps!

Regards

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think a pregnancy that has already started is technically considered a "pre-existing condition" and very few medical insurance companies will help out. Giving birth here sounds like a very costly affair (general opinion in the range of $5-8k) so you might want to consider some options very seriously. Of course, compared with some countries that's not too bad. I think it's outrageous!

And as for citizenship, your child's birth cert will have written on it: "Not a citizen of Singapore at the time of birth". So he/she will be the same citizenship as the parents.

Precisely K1w1 - pragnancy is a pre-existing condition, therefore NOT covered by heath/hospitalisation coverage - our little 'angel' is going to cost us over SGD10k when you add into it the pre-natal classes and such.
(NUH - not sure how much it is in other places)

Also, with the nationality issue - Singapore does not grant cotizenship on thos eborn here, whose parents are not Singaporean citizens. (Can you imagine the waves of Indonesians, Thais and Malaysians swarming over the border to have their kids here :o )
