Does anyone else hate these smilie things?! I notice some people comunicate soley by using them. It drives me mad!

Not a big issue in the great scheme of things though!

I agree! But my biggest peeve is when people copy several quotes or whole quotes. What happened to just quoting the imported parts???? Why do I need to re-read several posts?

I was thinking about starting thread on the weird usage of the smilies. I've seen posts where people will say something like: Hey, who wants to meet up? or something like that, and then go . Hmm, now that means "I'm taking the piss", right? So the whole meaning changes. Very weird.

Or maybe: I'm looking for a maid, can anyone recommend one? (So what's that? My housework really sucks and I hate the fact that I am looking for someone to do it?)

Yup, there's a whole lot going on at my house today... Raining, pouring and the sink is full of dishes.

I guess its like abbreviated text like “lol”

Totally agree with Shilo on this one, they are the only way a poster can express the way/mood of a post

E.g. if I was to say

"Vaucluse you can't be serious you ugly mug"

I'd probably get a rather rude reply and a slap!

But

"Vaucluse you can't be serious you ugly mug "

Maybe instead of smilies we should now say

"Vaucluse you can't be serious you ugly mug" Saint said laughing out loud while poking his tongue out.

All I can say is:

I think that the same rule should apply for commas and exclamation points -- less is more. There are times when an emoticon is the only way to put the fine tuning on your message.
