THERE’S light therapy, aromatherapy and now, oxygen therapy. The latter though is not as popular in Singapore as it is in Japan and the West, said Mr Michael Pang, a senior systems specialist with AirSupply Oxygen and Aromatherapy Bars.
In an email interview with TODAY, he tells us more about the therapy, which he believes may gain popularity in Singapore.
What is oxygen therapy and why do we need such a therapy?
It comprises of a series of sessions where supplementary oxygen is delivered to the body through a headset with an air outlet. Like the vitamins we take daily as supplements, supplementary oxygen can stimulate blood circulation, enhance concentration and increase
metabolism.
How common is this therapy?
The use of recreational oxygen is rampant in the West. In Japan, especially Tokyo, oxygen bars can be found in every street corner. Most international airports provide the service including Changi Airport, but there are very few public outlets in Singapore.
What made you decide to introduce this therapy in Singapore?
A human being can live for weeks without food, days without water, but only minutes without oxygen. Providing supplementary oxygen at the most relaxed time of the day will help expedite the repair process of the cells and refresh and restore the body. The use of aromatherapy together with the oxygen will further enhance the therapeutic effects. In China, I have heard that a very well known doctor will be conducting a controlled study of the geriatric population using oxygen to see if common elderly problems such as dementia and Alzheimer’s can be avoided with oxygen therapy. Because these elderly folks don’t sleep much, perhaps insufficient oxygen in the brains could be the cause of their problems.

AN EXTRA BREATH A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY?: Oxygen therapy, though more popular in Japan and the West, could catch on in Singapore if more people knew about its benefits.
