A good place to live.....

Post by pco27 » Thu, 03 Nov 2005 1:53 pm

hello all and i hope you can help...

i have a budget of $1600sgd per month, nearly 40, i'm no party pooper but i like a peaceful place, maybe with some green out the window, will be working central on orchard road, dont mind a 30min walk, 20 bike ride or 15min/30min mrt.......would be nice to have cheap food options and supermarket within walking distance nearby but not essential (i wont be buying a car).

looked at the maps and have an idea of the size of singapore but doesnt seem to help me come up with a district that i may call home for the next year or so.....i hear the holland area is ok but looking at the rent page looks a little out of my range.

would be great to hear any opinions out there......

Rrrrr

Look into Novena or Newton area, it would easily fit.

As much as we'd like to walk and bike to commute, thing is it's just too hot here. Not sure your co-workers would appreciate your efforts...

You have a lot of options, Novena/Newton is a good suggestion. Not sure what the prices are on Nassim? I love it up there... Or St. Martin's? Right in the heart of the city but so quiet.

You'l have a lot of choice, no worries.

those are lovely places. rent though is in the region of S$10k for the nassim and st martin areas. at least for the people i know who stayed there. newton and novena are nice too. some of the older walk-up apartments could perhaps be gotten for under S$2k. the new high-rise ones are probably over S$2k.

for a S$1600 budget your best bet for a nice place would be somewhere further out of town but near an mrt station. best to get a housing agent to give more concrete information.

Aren't there lower priced, older apartments on Nassim? I had friends that rented there for about $3 K, but that was years ago. Place has probably been torn down twice over since then.

Try the Mt. Sophia area - its near Orchard Road by Plaza Singapura. You can easily get a 1/2 bedroom for 1600.

As for Holland area, try the walkups near Holland village. I think one is called Warner Court. about 1400 for a two bedroom.

rents in district 9,10(orchard)are the highest in the city, with 1600 budget, look at the bukit timah/dunearn road(dist 11) area or newton/novena, distance is not really a fear factor here, it is mitigated by excellent public transport.
