Hi,
Just moved to Singapore from Australia and I am really missing my local book shop. I am living in Lakeside and want to know where I can buy books either in Singapore or online (without paying high shipping costs)? I have looked in Popular store and found not much at all and the prices were very high. Also do the libraries here carry much in popular fiction?
Are there any expat bookclubs happening? I don't know anybody here yet and would like to get to know fellow booklovers.
Thanks.

There's a library not too far from where you are, I'm sure. Check this site:

Borders and Kinokuniya are two bookstores you should check out. Both are in the Orchard Road shopping belt.
no trees were hurt in the making of this post but a few electrons were terribly inconvenienced

Also check out the little used book shops around. There is a good one at Far East Plaza and Holland Village. You 'rent' books really. Buy it for a certain price then get money back for it when you return it by a certain date. Good for the throw away paperback variety.
Amazon also delivers to Singapore and at times it is cheaper than Borders.
Lots of book groups around, just keep asking around

Can't chicken out now . . . (attempt at lowly humour)
Local libraries are quite well stocked with english books, or books in english I should say.
I tried to give a boatful (no exaggeration) of books to the library, but with typical public sercvice mentality wa told that they cannot take gifts, but I can hand them in downtown and then they would buy them for a small fee . . .

Vaucluse..may I ask what sort of books you gave/sold away? I'm lookin for nuggets on cultures(particularly ancient religion etc),geology and business/finance ( biography of corporations etc ) and oil/energy.
Still have any in stock..fine feathered friend?
As for the libraries,I couldn't find books on Oil/Energy ( E&P ) that I needed.
