womans clothing size question...?

I recently went to singapore and bought a few pairs of jeans - sizes 26 and 27. Now we don't use that sizing system here in australia, so I just kinda bought what seemed right (we weren't allowed to try them on in the shop).

I came home, I tried on the size 27 jeans, and they fit perfectly. The size 26's barely allowed me to button up. I'm a size 8 aussie, I was thinking of loosing a bit of weight to try and fit into the jeans, but I don't know what the size 26 is! I won't aim for it if it's something like size 6 aussie, so I'm looking for a bit of help here. Anyone know what size 26 converts too for australian sizing?

I'm guessing the number refers to inches.

BTW a tip for the times when you're not allowed to try on bottoms - just take the waistband and put it around your neck. If it goes round comfortably, it will fit. Try it on one of your bottoms at home, it really does work and it's saved me a lot of time when shopping!
