Foreign currency

Post by Kimi » Fri, 07 Oct 2005 12:49 pm

Any recommended place to buy US dollars?
Or any websites perhaps where I can find out and then compare the exchange rate of different places/banks etc.?
Thanks in advance.

http://www.xe.com will give you up to the minute (almost) exchange rates for a large number of currencies.

This is not the actual buy or sell rate since all banks will pay less for US dollars and will charge you more for US dollars... the buy/sell spread. But it will give you an idea of how much spread that bank is whacking you.

I know of no website listing all bank exchange rates, but you can check a few banks on a daily or weekly basis to find how wide their spreads are. Spreads on currency are almost always wider than for wire transfers.

if you want to change at bank , the better use the bank where you have a/c , or the spreads (cost ) would be very high .

But except the bank at China , all of banks have very wide spreads for money change under 10k usd

buying or selling foreign currency, go to a moneychanger, you really get better rates than at the bank here.

I always used to go to the one on Tanjong Pagar Road, next to the wet market there, trustworthy and fast.

2nd floor of the Exchange at Raffles Place. Generally all of the shops there are a couple of points better than the 2 facing the MRT entrance on the ground floor. They are better than all of the banks. Unless we're talk serious money that is (6 digits or better).

Second Exchange/Change Alley. There's loads of money changers there so shop around a bit - some of them may give you better rates if you are changing a relatively large amount.

Last week it was 1.67, not sure this week, fluctuates between 1.65 to 1.68.

Cheers sms, yuks, Eric and the others.
SMS is right the second floor has a couple of points better, most of them at least.
To the person who wants to know the rate yesterday, f-kun, it's 1.688.
