Tanglin Trust School

Post by kmlkml » Sun, 25 Sep 2005 3:27 pm

After my visit to Tanglin Trust School, I found that the class size is quite big in nursery (3-4 yrs old). It is about 24 kids in a class with one class teacher and 2 assistants. Any moms have kids in this school can share your view whether big class means less care and attention to children. How do the two assiatants support the teacher in the class ? What's their role ? I feel that the assistants take up the care giver role only, but not involve in any teaching role. Do they have any formal qualifications in child eductaion ?

At this age, there's probably not a lot of direct "teaching" going on. I think a ratio of 1:8 is pretty good, if all those people are doing some interaction with the kids. Why don't you ask the school if you can watch a class for an hour or two: that will show you what the assistants do, and how much time you can expect for your child to be engaged with a teacher. And ask the principal what their qualification requirements for assistants are. It's not pushy and rude - you have a right to ask loads of questions!! Best of luck.
