Website for Visually Impaired Person

Post by koyuli » Mon, 19 Sep 2005 12:10 am

Hi all,

I am recently preparing to convert my website to screen-reader friendly so that my visually impaired friends and many others can have the ease of surfing.

Although, there are many helpful information in the internet, I think it would be great to speak to anyone who has experiences creating such websites

or

have experiences with the V.I.P = Visually Impaired Person, knowing and understanding their concern and needs when surfing the internet.

Even if you belong to 'None-of-the-above', you are most welcome to share any pointers with me.

Every suggestion will be well-apreciated,
Thank you, in advance.

Good thinking.

VIP can be classified into different categories. Lots of computer hardware depend'c are to be considered.

Website should support for online reading and be voice interactive and there can also be special keyboard that can support the typing and printing option.
cheers.

Hi but confused..

My V.I.P friends are permanent Total-Vision-Loss people.

What is this about 'changing category?' -

Visual loss is a fact that can't be changed..
or
Are you telling me to change my friends?

Hi,

I would suggest when converting to V.I.P friendly website, it is also important to include people who are partial visually handicapped. One way is to design bigger fonts and more contrast.

I would like to share some of the useful web resources so that people can have an easier time locating them in future :) :

1. Web Content Accessibility Guidelines from W3C:
http://www.w3.org/TR/WAI-WEBCONTENT/

2. Validators for web accessibility -Cynthia
http://www.webnauts.net/check.html

3. Color contrast analyser
http://juicystudio.com/services/colourcontrast.php

4. Some tutorials:
The most useful one from W3C
http://www.w3.org/WAI/wcag-curric/sam1-0.htm

one more:
http://www.umuc.edu/distance/odell/cade ... index.html

Hope it will benefit other developers and needy friends :)

Accessiblity

Hi koyuli,

Came across this microsoft site, though it would be of some use in creating shortcuts with the existing keyboard design and voice guided features.

http://www.microsoft.com/enable/

If you are considering for a page reader, can look at this 3rd part component that can be embeded into the webpagez,
