CAN PARTNER COME WITHOUT WORK FOR SHORT TERM

Post by rickwills » Fri, 16 Sep 2005 8:56 pm

Hi, i am a Tennis Coach and in the process of getting a job in Singapore. They recognise my qualification so shouldnt have much of a problem however my girlfriend may initially go to Singapore without a organised job. CAN THIS HAPPEN? she is an English language teacher so should also find work but wants to have a look around first. Any help will be appreciated as we are in big decision time!!!

Your gf can come on a long-term social visit pass, or a social visit pass (valid for 30-90 days depending on her nationality). There is quite a bit of English teaching work, so she shouldn't have too much trouble.

You're girlfriend, I'm guessing is a brit, will get a 30 day stamp when she arrives as a tourist. After the 30 days gets a bit difficult as Singapore doesn't recognise boyfriend/girlfriend as a relationship which will entitle her to a LSVP. If 30 days isn't long enough for her she can always pop out of Singapore for a "long weekend". If you want another 30 days, by air is the safest way rather than by road.

As she's a English Language teacher, as long as she has the appropiate qualifications, (Master, PHD speaks Manadrin...... only joking!) she should be able to find a teaching job. If not in a school, there are lots of "English Language Schools" always looking for teachers.

The only way is for her to try to get a job while she is in Singapore on the tourist visa.. Otherwise she can try online for some jobs interviews..

Yes, the government does not recognize girlfriend and boyfriend as relationship in term of dependency pass. So if eventually she cannot find a job in sg, and you really hope she can be here, and you two love each other.. you can marry her!! :D 8) Then she will have the rights to stay in singapore because of you. From there, then she has all the time to look for jobs.. :)

My 2cent
Cheers,
take care

If she has a passport from a country which does not need a visa in advance to visit Singapore as a tourist eg the UK, she can come with you initially on a normal social visit pass (the usual tourist stamp in her passport at the airport, normally for 30 days for Brits). If you two have been living together in a long term relationship and can show that with joint rent/mortgage papers, bills, bank a/c or other paperwork which shows the relationship, she can apply for a Long Term Social Visit Pass which will allow her to live here but not to work. That will give her time to stay here and look for a job then apply for her own EP.
