I think there is a very perceivable difference between people online and offline. very much so.
In forums people can be a little bit of attention whores, that is they adore people noticing them; and most of them yearn for response and commotion.
Chat medium can be even worse. People get what I term 'digital courage' - you can talk about all sort of wild topics, that people just wouldnt talk about at parties (well, any parties I get invited to)
I've met quite alot of people I've known online at an offline situation. Generally people are more shy, less spontaneous, and certainly less humourous when put on the spot.
Offline is too different, people can spend so long thinking about what they are going to say next. People are far more likely to be restricted by their inhibitions.
Having ranted all that, I've been told I dont alter much from my online persona - I put it down to having no fear about being thought of as a fool in either medium. meh :p
