Housing for 30 year old Expat

Post by Harpua1 » Sat, 03 Sep 2005 8:10 pm

Hello,

I'll be moving to Singapore in a few weeks, and am starting the search for housing. I'm a 30 year old single American Born Chinese, who's spent some time in Hong Kong and New York City -- so I'm used to living conditionson the smallish-side. I'm on a 1-year contract and am open to signing a 1-year lease.

Would you please provide some recommendations on areas (or specific properties) to consider to focus my search?

Criteria:
- Mush be close to MRT station.
- Prefer to be close to California Fitness.
- Prefer to have cafes, bookshops, restaurants within walking distance.
- Not a total expat community (I've been living in the mid-levels of Hong Kong and it's a bit too "collegy" for me). I'd like to mix in with local Singaporeans.
- Budget sensitive, I'm on my own for housing.
- Live by myself.
- Not a Serviced Apartment.

I also have a couple of questions:
1. What the market rate for unfurnsihed vs. furnished housing? I do not need a serviced apartment.
2. Is a 3-bedroom, 1000 s.f. apartment the standard? This seems like a huge amount of living space.
3. What's the best place to look? The Strait Times, or through rental agencies.

Thanks in advance. Your input would be appreciated.

Hi,
There's a newly built condo which would be ready in December 2005. You may wish to consider. The name of the condo: Grandeur 8 in Ang Mo Kio Central. MRT across the street; supermarket and hawker center within walking distance! Good location at the heartland.

There is no harm getting yourself a Serviced Apartment for a couple of weeks to scout around for the best deals. Trust me, you DO NOT want to enter into a 1-year rental contract without having searched thoroughly for the best deals.

That said, while you're at it you may want to check out the Newton/Novena area, which is really close to town and has all the amenities (Not one but two MRTs, three supermarkets, bars/pubs/restaurants, bookstores, and an upcoming sports-themed mall) in the immediate vicinity.

This area fits every single criteria of yours, right down to the Cal Fitness which will be coming soon in the area. It is kinda like a Santa Monica with taller, modern-looking buildings; or a cleaner, greener, more spaced-apart uptown NY.

I currently live in the area and I'm lovin it!

Hope this helps.
