If you are looking for a pediatrician in the eastern part of Singapore, Dr Sim Sze Keen is at Elias Mall.

We'll be here for at least the next two years. After that, who knows!

Okay, "bargain" lady :P - -

1) any place that sells baskets of all sizes (for storage)? Wasn't really in the mood to pay $50-60 per basket though. I already tried Lim's and Ikea (still not quite what I had in mind)

2) looking for bookshelves and storage type things with drawers. Preferably made of teak (or another funky wood), & something that doesn't seem like it was made on an assembly line(mass produced and bland). But also a decent price (not sure what "decent price" is, though! lol)

So.....any suggestions? Or am I even being realistic?
Hi Jinkel,

if you're still looking for affordable colonial style stuff, try out the Barang Barang shops. They are all over the island, like in Harbourfront mall, Great world city (good mall for teak anyway, there's a teakstore at the 2nd or 3rd storey there), Tanglin mall etc.

Like HelloThere said, south bridge road / China town / pagoda street is a nice place to shop for this too.

Hope you people get a bit accomodated already, just go and meet matney and you will feel at home

Live not far away from Kembangan myself, actually in between Kembangan and Parkway parade, around Still Road.

see ya,

Eric

Eric,

Thanks for the tips! Still getting my bearings and trying to figure out how to get places (don't have a car, and have a 3yr old w/stroller in tow) - but each day brings an opportunity to get on more thing checked off my list. :)

Any chance this south bridge road, pagoda street area is within realistic walking distance from an MRT? I just remembered you have a car, so may not use MRT that often, and you might not be able to answer this question. So....no biggie! I'll figure it out! :D

Thanks for the input - I'm not sure where Still Road is (or Parkway parade! ) But hoping to learn - I've no intention of getting stuck in my condo with nothing to do...

Hi Kim,

I do drive nowadays, but know the MRT too well from the past (and still using it now and then). Yep, pagoda street is right outside Chinatown mrt station, it is mentioned as an exit, no problem to find it. It is a bit narrow crowded trouristy street with all kind of stalls with tourist stuff, but in the chinese shophouses around is very good stuff to find. We ourselves bought most of our furniture at the antique store of Shing’s Antique Gallery at #26. The owner is called Wai Ling, she is a great lady, adorable and helped us out so much. She has a huge variety of all kinds of furniture and antiques from China, amazing.

Here's a peek of how it looks over there, at the back you see the exit of the MRT, the modern building in the middle of the street.

Parkway Parade is the huge shopping mall of east coast. If you'd walk along the mrt from Kembangan towards town, you will cross the junction with Still road. (about half a mile or so from Kembangan). There you'd trun left, go all along still road, until you cross the junctiuon with Marine parade road, then turn right and after a few hundred meters on the left side is Parkway parade. Can't miss it, the highest mall around east coast.

Happy shopping

thanks Kim,

you're welcome. If we can be of any assistance, just shout. I am not considering myself to be a specialist in east coast, but I do stay here, know my way around here pretty well and am a great fan of this area.

Once you are a bit more familiar here and you settled down, you might wanna meet a few of us (we had a dining gathering just 2 weeks ago, at which me and my wife met Matney and hubby amongst others), keep an eye on the events, gatherings section, if interested.

Funny thing just now... was takin mrt for first time since a while back, then I noticed that Barang Barang also have a shop in Paya Lebar shopping mall, right next to the Paya Lebar mrt station. So from Kembangan to Paya Lebar is just 2 stops...

Eric, my ears are burning!!! I didn't realise that I made that much of an impression.

Kim, Eric really does know his way around the East side of this little island. Probably between the two of us we can get you where ever you'd like to go or find. Just ask. I've been here since Christmas and finally went to my first function and those attending the C&C dinner are a great group of expats!

Meeting up with you guys would be awesome (I'll keep my eyes on the "events/gatherings" section). It'll probably be a while, since I don't have childcare at the moment. But I'm looking forward to chatting you all up in person, for sure.

Again, I really appreciate the advice, comments (& attention to detail- wow). It's nothing short of actually coming to my condo, holding my hand, and physically walking me to all these places! ;)

eric - Funny you mention the Paya Lebar stop. I've noticed that mall so many times when on the MRT (on my way to Tampines). Been meaning to hop off and check it out...

eric - Jumped off the rabbit and checked out Paya Lebar (Barang Barang). VERY cool store. They definitely had a TON of baskets for storage, decoration, etc. Having a little trouble choking down the $50-70 per basket price though. <cough!> I guess I'm spoiled - - baskets like that in the U.S. are *super* cheap. Ha ha! I'll get over it...

Hi Kim,

actually I realize it is a hare, not a rabbit, right?

Anyway, I forgot to tell you that Arab Street is the place to go shopping for rotan baskets for storage. Arab street is a touristy street, but genuine and nice to visit. Take the MRT towards Bugis (same EW line), exit there at the "Rochor Road / Victoria street" exit. When you come outside, turn right, walk along Victoria street, until you meet the junction woth Arab street, then turn right and you will see all I am talking about: Indian shops with loads of baskets, silk and other exotic stuff, it's worth the trip, a very nice part of Old Singapore. Not needed, it is very cheap already, but this is a place where you can bargain as well.

Enjoy,

Eric
