Singapore Credit Card Comparison

Post by enrique » Thu, 25 Aug 2005 9:00 pm

Mornin

Does anyone have any recommendations on Credit Cards in Singapore? Even better, a website that compares them (have looked but cant find).
As much as every product i buy makes a statement about my lifestyle (WTF Amex!) and the idea of whippin a card made from completewankerium outta me wallet is sure to impress the ladies, all i want is:

-good rewards program, possibly that could be used outside of Singapore - eg transferrable to another account
-some sort of frequent flyer tie-up would be good
-minimal charges

if anyone has any experience or recommendations, that would be great
thanks. En.

The big problem with all Singapore credit cards is their onerous theft terms. Until you notify the bank, you are responsible for all charges... some also say it is up to them if they will waive charges after notification... could be a lot, especially if you travel out of country.

That's partly why I am sticking with my Amex since 1990. They have handled a couple of "unauthorized use" cases very well for me.

surely i won't get penalized if the card was cloned? citibank malaysia replaced my card a few times with nothing charged...

it's understandable immediate report should be made after the card was lost...

i've been poking about, and found that POSB, OCBC and AMRO banks offer 3-year annual fee waiver. If one pay in full every month and hence avoid the 18% annual hit, what else is there to consider?

If you go to the websites of all the major banks, virtually all of them say that you will be responsible for PIN type cash withdrawls even after you inform the bank.

So, yes... you grab a trip to Saigon... somebody there keeps a copy of your card number and goes on a buying spree... two weeks later you get home to a humongous bill... the banks say you are liable... it would be up to them to forgive any of the debt.

Amex is much better, and cards issued on American banks, although subject to currency conversion fees, have a $50 US limit on loss... period.

i was never an amex cardholder.

is the mere one-year annual fee waiver worth the benefits described?

Amex is not widely accepted by many many retailers, it's just not user friendly and not much benefits to it.

They must like you. From the Citibank card agreement:

You are liable for all unauthorized card transactions effected following
such loss, theft or disclosure, whether they are effected as a result of
the unauthorized use of the card, any MCCA check (if we have granted
you the MasterCard Check Access Facility), the PIN and/or the TBS
Access Code or otherwise but provided that if we are satisfied that
such loss, theft or disclosure is not due to your negligence or default
and that you have fully complied with clauses 9.1 and 9.2, we may
agree at our absolute discretion to waive entirely or limit to such
amount determined by us from time to time, your liability for all
unauthorized card transactions made after our receipt of your
notification to us under clause 9.2, provided that such waiver or
limitation shall not apply to cash advances.

Note that cash advances are not included in their generostity.

However, for $5 per month you can get better protection.

umm, SE, doesn't that still say "responsible until report of loss"?

Yes, it does. Moreover, you still have to eat cash withdrawls even after you notify.
