Hi Guys,

Working on a project and need some help. Can you post back with your favorite Chinese/Singaporean superstitions? Like, 'Do not drink iced water, it will upset your stomach' or 'Do not eat shellfish if you have a broken bone, it will take longer to heal'. (Every cab driver in Singapore told me that one). Anything at all you can think of will be helpful.

Thanks so much,

BH10Y

If you see an accident, write down the car number and play it in lottery... If this number brought bad luck to him, it will bring good luck to someone else.

I guess you are talking about la Marche de l'Empereur... No I haven't seen it. But heard about it. Is it good? Have you seen LE PEUPLE MIGRATEUR? That's a good movie as well.

I'd rather not go to a librabry, I'd like people to share actual old wives' tales they have been told. Koyuli, perfect. Thanks.

don't eat dark soya sauce when you're pregnant or your baby will be born dark-skinned.

don't leave any rice on your plate or you will become pock-marked, or marry a man who is pock-marked, can't remember which.

don't make faces in case the wind changes and your face gets stuck the way it is.

Eric from the Netherlands wrote:After my father in law passed away last year, we were not supposed to wear bright colors for a while (believe it was 100 days). Me being a bit stubbern, I wear a red t-shirt one day when I went out to have lunch. Walked outside the condo, got attacked by a crow.... no kidding. Bleeding form the head, called my wife to tell her what happened, she insisted it was because I wear the red shirt.

Well I guess then it isn't just a superstition...

When I lived in Hong Kong my uncle used to work for the Jockey club. They had betting outles all over the island (mark 6 was the HK lottery like 4D here). He was signing invoives one day & saw one for 12 daggers. He asked his secretary what it was for & she just mumbled something like "sorry not for you" & took it away. A few days later he was doing the same thing & she had slipped the same invoice into the pile - he wanted to get to the bottom of this. She told him that whenever they build a betting outlet they put 12 daggers all pointing down within the wall above the doorway, to stab the betters in the back as they walk in so they will not win.

Also in Hong Kong it is considered bad luck if you are having a whole fish for a meal to turn it over to get the meat underneath as a fisherman will die at sea.

There are also very strict rules for women who have just had a baby not to touch water. They have to bathe in gigner or something - although I do not know any more details or reason for that one. But I have got friends who were going out one day with their new born baby & it was beginign to rain. The guard rushed over with an umbrella to stop the mother getting wet.
Also new mums have a strict diet - pig organs (again not 100% on this either)

From my wife :

Don't sweep the floor on the forst day of CNY or you will sweep all your luck away . .

Don't sit on books or you will be stupid forever

Eat lots of lobster brains - it increases your intelligence (this, for a fairly brainless crustacean)

Don't shower while you're still sweaty or you'll catch a cold . . .

Don't sigh on the first 15 days of CNY or your year will be filled with sorrow

Ghosts can't cross water . . . (good to know when we're swimming in our pool at night :P )
