I have been there only once, just came back yesterday in fact... We had a nice combination, 3 nights in the center of Bali with visits of temples, rice fields, etc...
Then 4 days in a resort.
We stayed at the Bali Reef Resort, http://www.balireef-resort.com/

What I liked is the size (small resort with individual bungalows) and atmosphere. You don't feel like in a tourist factory. And the staff was very friendly. Food was good, with a large selection.

The beach is not beautiful but I have been told that Bali is not the best place for beaches.

Again, this was my first time there, so quite difficult for me to compare with something else...

You'd have to be a lot more clear on your budget. There is such a wide range, and Bali is a big, place.
When you go in for a job interview, I think a good thing to ask is if they ever press charges.

agree with bh10y,

We always (well, went there 3 times...) go to Ubud, last 2 times we stayed in Komaneka Tangayuda suites, 1 bedroom villas with private pool and a heavenly gorgeous fantastic superb view on the valley below with the paddy fields. Incredible spa overlooking the jungle, great great food.

But there is literally thousands of great great places in Bali.

Been there many times... yap, carpe diem is right, bali beaches r not so good, but the good ones r in Nusa Dua area, the beaches are cleaner than in Kuta or Sanur, can also try Wonderlands, not so many tourists there.
Better go to Lombok if u have time :D , there's this small Islands called Gili Islands, very nice beach and you can do anything u want in that small island

how much is yr budget anyway for hotel or resort?

Lombok and Gilli Islands are very nice, but not quite as memorable as Bali I think. Bali and Lombok are not alike at all in fact, the religion is different -- so are the festivals and the architecture. In a geological sense, Lombok is actually on a different continent. I'd stick with Bali if it is a first trip: avoid Kuta like the plague and find something with a view of the Agung river in Ubud. Employ as many people as you can afford: hire a driver, get a massage, etc.... they are desperate for tourist dollars. Selamat Jalan!

If u plan to visit Bali in a group....say about 6pax to 8pax, you might want to checkout Mia Villas. www.miavillas.com
we stayed there a few months back and it was such a great place. you have the entire compound to yourself!
Not sure if they raised the prices.
