Cost of raising a child in Singapore?!

Post by halcyon » Sat, 10 Jul 2004 4:14 pm

I'm thinking of migrating to Singapore but am worried about the costs for raising my 1 yr old son long term. Can anyone tell me what the average costs for raising a kid here per month/year are? Please help!

I've been told rearing young children is cheaper in SIngapore than anywhere in the Western world. This is because of the cheap maid rates. They look after the kids for you & cook & clean if you want them to for less that $1K a month (so I've heard). Back home in Australia my relatives were paying about $20/hour for a babysitter. Since your child is only 1 yrs old I suppose you don't have to worry about eduaction for a few years. I hope this helps.

Where are you from?
I am moving over shortly (hopefully) & have just started to check all of this out.
I would definitely check out sending the child to a day care or the like as they can learn so much. It's also good for their social skills plus it gives you a break & them a break from you.
Once they start going to preschool it is a lot more expensive than Australia. Basically, in Australia I pay $60/day for child care (under3yo), in Sydney this is average I think. Preschools are from 3 years of age & cost about $30/day in Australia. In Singapore the Australian School is S1365 for 2 days/week/term (10wks). This is more than double the price & does not include building funds of S460/term, uniforms & everything else I've missed.
If we are in Australia for primary school then he will go to the local public school which costs next to nothing. High school he will go to a private one & will cost about the same as Australian int. School.
Hope this gives you a bit more of an idea.
