relocating with 2 children! Need contacts

Post by rachel molyneux » Sat, 20 Aug 2005 4:25 am

I am getting married at Christmas and then relocating from the UK to Singapore in January. I have 2 children aged 8 and 10 who will be attending the Tanglin School. I would really like to make contact with other people in a similar situation who can help us all settle in. Has anyone any advice about clubs to join, or any ways for us all to meet up with people in similiar situations? Thanks.

Hi there,

do you want to meet people when you arrive, or get in touch before landing?

If you live in a condo, you will find that you will meet people pretty quickly. Kids are a great ice-breaker, and meeting other mums will follow on pretty quickly. There are also clubs around (there is a British Club, for example). If you are going to be a stay-home-mum, your kids school is likely to have something for mums in a similar boat - informal or otherwise. I have found it easy meeting people here - easier than home, sine most expats are out here without families or the usual support networks.

Otherwise, post your questions and concerns (we've all been there) and let the good members of the board help you out as much as we can!

Hi, thanks for the reply,it's appreciated.

I would prefer to be in
touch with people before landing, its good to get contacts going!

I intend to continue working when I arrive, I am a qualified teaching assistant, experienced throughout primary ed. Any ideas on how to find out about job possibilities, etc????

Thanks!!

Rachel.

Being a teacher myself, I think once you are settled, know where you are living, visit the schools nearby and let them know you live locally and what your past experiences are. If you say the children will be at Tanglin, that would be my first place to let know that you are available. If you are experienced and willing to work, I doubt you will have any trouble locating a position as a teacher's assistance. I know I'd use you if my school would pay for one.

Good luck, as previously stated, we've all been there and we all seem pretty willing to help others. There must be others here with children at Tanglin who you can touch base with before you arrive, I'm not one of them. :(

Thanks very much for your reply, I appreciate your input very much. I will indeed get in touch with Tanglin and see what they have to say. Thanks again! rachel :)
