Korean's in Singapore and other questions

Post by Flying Doctor » Sat, 10 Jul 2004 12:47 pm

Hi,

we are moving to Singapore in a couple of weeks. I've been several times before and actually lived there for a month in 1991. I'm Irish and my wife is Korean and I'd like to ask if anyone knows much about the Korean community in Singapore. Are they spread out all over the place or do they tend to live in a particular area? Are there any Korean societies or wives groups etc? We intend to stay for a long time and any help / advice in getting settled would be grateful. No kids so gotta make sure the wee woman is happy :D

I always remembers Singapore as being very clean, tidy, safe and the people I met as being friendly. The heat and humidity was the kicker. I've been browsing the forum for a while and was wondering about people using the MRT and buses. I used to use the underground in Shanghai when we lived there but during the summer I just sweated like a drain walking the 5 mins from the apartment to the Tube station. I know the climate is pretty constant throughout the year in Singapore, but do you ever get a break from the heat and humidity or do you just get used to it? I lived in the Middle East for a few years and the summers in Abu Dhabi were probably the worst for humidity I have ever experienced (lived or worked in 26 countries at the last count so I have a few to compare).

Ooops, sorry rambled on a bit there. It's the Irish blood ;-)

Thanks

Pete

Korean community in Singapore

Hi
I know nothing about the Korean community I'm sorry, but in answer to your question about the humidity, nah, not much change throughout the year. However, I travel to the Middle East and some business trips are a month long, and unfortunately quite a few in the summer. Now then, you'll never find the same sort of heat in Singapore, but the humidity in Sing can be just as cloying, though if you remember the really bad days in Abu Dhabi, well, not many of the same type of levels in Sing, but it's debilitating, to be sure, but....you'll get used to it. (Well, you have to, don't you?)
Sorry, another chatter, I'm Welsh, so it must be the Celtic condition!!!!
Good luck.
Ask away about anything else you and your wife may have queries on. Also look at the thread on this site, Living in Singapore, what is it like? Quite a few pointers there.
