Singapore Expats

Hi. I have not been on the forum for a while. Recently, I have been wondering how I can get to meet more people - female or male. I am a local gal, 28, studied in London and been back for 6 years. My views are not always conventional - most of my friends are non-Singaporeans or gay (no connection haha) and I realise that I just want girlfriends or groups of friends with similar interests.

I am a working adult like most people - interested in politics, fashion, pop culture and love going out. The dating service is not really the place to find friends I guess (some bad experiences) haha.

Anyway, I was wondering if there are other channels to know people besides drinking sessions I sometimes see here? My friends have advised me to join classes but I am working most of the time and I can't even keep up swimming lessons in the week, let alone classes

Anyone who has had luck finding friends I'd like to know!

I find your situation similar to mine but it all comes down to you to join any of the events organised and go out to meet people really. Maybe join some of the movie trips or try out one of the drinking outings, maybe you'll meet someone with similar interests and from there you can plan outings that more in tune with what you wanna do. I am so glad with the responses - seems we found some nice people to hang out with. I have contacted the 3 girls who replied. Hope we can get something together and just get to know more female friends.

It doesn't have to be a big group - I personally like this arrangement of a small group of people so we can get to know each other, and maybe develop new friendships

I am born in Singapore and proud to be ethnic Chinese. I am educated at the London School of Economics in History and Political Philosophy. I speak English better than Mandarin (not proud of that I must say) and I speak Hakka, Hokkien and Cantonese (in respective levels of proficiency).

Everyone's unique - but you wouldn't catch me dead as a China girl.

Anyway I don't know what is your issue - the white people in England think I'm too Chinese, while the people here think I'm too "Western".

Well, if people are my friends they must have good reason

King's of England - it's so not cool to "out" someone on this forum. I'm sure blackadder has nothing to be ashamed of, but we all use nicknames for a reason (as I see you did, grammatical mistakes and all), and to post a real name when the OP hasn't done it first is just plain rude.

Blackadder, I would recommend you go one of these days to WNDC - bring friends if you don't want to show up alone, I've been a few times and people are nice enough!

I don't think there is a need to doubt; it's a 'group' of 'friends', rather than 'dating'; further more it's more like a girl's group.

I'm local, never left Singapore at all; but most of my friends are gay or some people who generally don't fit in very well into the community.

I'm considered western-thinking too, somehow, if people are too nice or too not into the local culture; we're going to be treated as some minority. In the end, all our friends seems to be gays - but it's cool, they tend to be better friends anyway.

I have returned to SG 6 months ago after living in US for 8 years. I studied and worked in San Francisco, so that makes me a non-practicing Singaporean. Most of my friends are expats and/or gays, (well, can't really blame me yeah, isn't SF like the gay capital of the world???)

A lot of people think my mannerism is too 'American'.

I will love to look for friends who share a similar background. I'm very open-minded and liberal, and am quite laid-back.

So if there's room for one more, please count me in!

Saw your posts on making friends besides the run of the mill drinking route.. well this may interest you guys and gals.

Come sept 1 (yes the launch) there will be a new place to salsa, from the 1st September onwards every First Thursday of the month you will be able to listen to the sexy latin beats and and get hypnotised by the undulating swaying of ze hips and get your blood pressure up by the sensous intertwining of bodies of limbs.. (I mean salsa of course).

This will be at the Hard Rock Cafe. For just S$10 as a first drink cover charge, you get your desired dose of salsa merengue and Bachata at Hardrock. Just rock up to the entrance and look for the "Lion's Den" its on the first floor.

This would be a nice way to meet folks and get sucked into a new hobby.. which can be totally addictive but its great fun and a tremendous workout.. and yes you will meet guys and gals.
