well darling coz you're life isn't interesting enough.this is a singapore btw and you are an expat in a singaporean country. Don't you ever forget that!

Expats conveniently forget that its singaporeans who are defending this country while they live it up here.

I'm not asking for sympathy. Just stating a story that happened. I wasn't expecting a huge reaction.

This could happen to anyone and wanted to highlight it here. You are welcome to reply or otherwise.

Thinking he had left it on the shelf, he was prepared to leave when he was detained. Now, several questions begs asking:

If this is actually what happend, he was stopped before leaving the premises, he has not stole anything. A good brief should easy get him off!

If he was still on the premises, he could actually discover the lost item, before leaving and paid a second time, if they had given him the chance. But they didn't, technically speaking a person must leave the shop, and then security can hold him back for stealing, but not before leaving the shop.

He can always say he was trying to remember where the item was, while he is still in the shop, and didn't leave the shop, becuase he remembed picking up the item, but couln't find it. Security was wrong to arrest him, before leaving the shop.

Dear Guest, as you have mentioned he was caught in uniform.. I think it make thing worse..

Like what you had said he could afford to pay for a $800.00 camera..and there is no reason for him to put a $3.00 item in his bag.. but then it was caught with unpay item be it what is the amount is..

What i suggest is since he is from a good rep in school and as well as in his army life.. go to the school, or even his officer to get a referral letter from them and go to a lawyer..

Indeed, I was wondering the same thing. Went there last week to buy some veggies (great variety) and every bag was zipped tightly - even the smallest item of anything could not fall in inadvertently nor intentionally.

So, you are opening yourself up to a forum and request replies and then you denigrate perfectly honest and sincere responses - this only shows you to be quite light-witted, among other things. Then you graciously 'allow' people to give their replies . . . Do you have a Jekyll and Hyde thing going here?

Ok, my 3 cents wirth, if this is a real story - for $3 nothing much would happen, given the circumstances, especially if you hire a lawyer and get references to testify to the guy's personlity and honesty...

So, any witticisms to add? Any references to Expats being aware of being Expats - like we need reminding . . . (oh, you do realise this is called SingaporeExpats, so if you only wanted or value responses from locals, I'm sure there are a few 'locals only' sites.

As far as 'living it up here'. Well, I get up in the morning, go to work or the airport to fly to meetings, get home at night, have dinner with my family. Week-ends are spent with friends,all bar two are locals by the way, and their kids.

Whew - I am living it up in Singapore!!!!!

Yup, confirmed. Went to Mustafa today for some groceries, my wife's bag was kept at the entrance and our purchases, in two departments, were sealed after each payment.

No way anything could have dropped in acidentally.

More than meets the eye on this, I believe.

I'm Singaporean btw and every singaporean male has to serve NS, like my nephew. If Singapore is ever attacked, there is a possibility it might if you have been reading the papers, its singaporean males like my nephew will be putting their lives on the line, defending the country.

Its singaporeans like my nephew who spent two and a half years of their precious life serving the nation for pittance.


Will the expats do the same? My comments were not meants to be derogatory but the fact to a reply from a posting that said 'why discuss about a stupid indian's story." What makes this chap think I'm indian? Does it mean everyone who shops at Mustafa is an indian?

I work in a firm with huge number of expats and I can certainly testify that they are certainly living it up here.

Why don't you ask one of your loaded workmates?

I guess I fall into the category of expat (since I'm not local), but when I recently told a local colleague how much money my husband earns, he was shocked. Not all of us are on massive packages. Some of don't have packages at all. Some of us really like it here, and want to stay. Some of us intend on putting our sons through NS too.

Please do not assume that an expat (more specifically a Caucasian expat) is here just for money. Not all of us are.

Whoooooa, there Bessy. Good for your nephew for doing his National Service. I did mine in my country and rubbish like yours would have embarassed me.
So, will expats do the same? Yes, many have, though not in Singapore.
Most of us are too old to do NS here, I don't think they are sending teens overseas as expats yet.

May I please join your company, as living it up is something I'd like to do as well.
As an expat in Australia I was earning far more than the average and went to dinner, away for the week-ends, had parties, a house with a pool, nice cars.

Your definition of living it up is really just having a raised standard of living due to the fact that most expats are well into their careers and are above-average earners.

From your vast experience - working at a company with lots of expats (I'm guessing 30.000-40.000 or more as that would give a good indication of averages)

Please don't be jealous of us, and don't drag this into an expat-local thing. You posted a story to invite comments and didn't like them, derided the posters and now are backtracking.

As I said earlier, my cutting reply was meant for only one poster, whose remarks were very deratory towards indians. The post has suddenly gone MIA.

They were not meant to deride those who had provided their remarks, which Í thank them for.

I'm not turning this into an expat-bashing arena and neither am I back-tracking. Yes I work and socialise with expats and I should have said 'most' expats, not all, are living up here. My apologies for the omission.

I posted this incident not to seek advice but to highlight this nightmare that occurred to me and yes, I have already consulted a lawyer.
