Must all Permanent Residents hold and renew Reentry permits?

Post by PK » Fri, 29 Jul 2005 4:23 am

I am trying to understand this aspect of Singapore law for a case in the U.S. immigration court:
Must a Singapore Permanent Resident hold and renew a Reentry Permit, even if they have no plan to travel outside of Singapore? And if they do not hold the reentry permit, is it correct that they would be deported?
Thank you for your response.

The way I understand it is no you don't 'have' to hold a reentry permit as long as you are in Singapore (I am a long time PR). However, if you leave Singapore (like going across the causeway) you will not be allowed back in even if you are still a PR. You should renew your reentry permit every 5 years.

That said, I am not sure what the requirements are if you happen to be unemployed at that point as 'gainfully employed was one of the requirements the last time I had mine renewed'. Just don't leave Singapore until your have it sorted out as it IS REQUIRED to reenter the country.

Yeah, thanks to sms for pointing out this seemingly nasty gotcha...

To think that one stands to lose one's PR just like that for forgetting to renew the re-entry permit after five years?!
