hey you mite wanna check with RELC. otherwise logon www.collegeboard.com and register! the last time i did i signed up online, think it's better to do so online as you get an immediate confirmation printout? met some who didnt receive their confirmation by post in time for the test but still went to venue to sit for it.

Having been through the entire process over the past 24 months, here are some useful tips.

1. Prep doesn’t help much. Practice tests do.
2. If you need a particular date, new slots for the entire year are released around July 1.
3. Opting out for “test optional” is usually not a smart move (especially for overseas applicants).
4. You can/should send scores where you intend to apply *well in advance* of applying.
5. Right after testing, you can send results to a few schools for free, don’t miss the deadline!
6. Don’t use a Singapore address or else they will charge you GST! Stupid me, I didn’t realize this until the last test score was sent — after switching to a US address the tax went from 9% to 0%!

Wish I had known about the address tip! With tests costing a couple hundred, savings would have been significant.

Yeah, wish I’d known earlier too. I would have never dreamed an outfit from the US would even know what GST was. Had GST not risen from 8 to 9%, I wouldn’t have noticed, but that difference caught my eye. I then did the math and it was 9%, and no state has 9% sales tax. I then proceeded to change the address to my home state (which does not charge tax on services) and that did the trick, 0%.

Come to think of it, the price difference between the test in Singapore and the US is pretty significant. No reason for such a huge disparity.

Yep, it’s an extra US$43 (before tax) for the pleasure of taking the test overseas.

I also paid extra for the privilege of seeing her answers in case she wanted to know which ones she got wrong for next time (but in the end she decided not to retake it).

We did the same for our girl, though honestly there's no benefit to viewing the answers as the questions never repeat themselves. Though it is helpful to know if there are a certain type of questions that are consistently being missed in order to correct the mistakes for next time.

It's basic price discrimination at work. That's either a good business practice or no reason for such... (depending on how we want to look at it and what side of the fence you are on).

Most people taking the test outside of the US can and will pay, even if they don't like it. I have two examples right here!

Quite frankly, they could probably double the price for you guys and the credit card would still be ready to tap. If they really wanted to be a jerk, they'd have the price floating, one dollar less than the cost of a flight back to the US!

You're exactly right. Fortunately fee waivers are always an option for those who truly can't afford it. That being said, there are often many who are left sandwiched - while they are not technically poor, they're also unable to blow hundreds on a test.

As expats in Singapore, we are well conditioned to expect price discrimination. We have developed muscle memory for bending over :-o and as for the credit card… the feeling is more like “let me hand you the lube, and let’s get this over with”

Graphic, Mal! But couldn't agree more.
