Clothes for kids

Post by Guest » Wed, 20 Jul 2005 5:37 pm

Hi,
We're moving from Australia to Switzerland and then from Switzerland to Singapore next January.
When we were going to be living in Switzerland I stocked up on jeans and long pants for my baby daughter. Knowing that the temp is aver 30 degrees all year round in Singapore do I need to bring over these jeans etc or is it a waste of space as she won't get to wear them.

Last time I visited Singapore I noticed heaps of people wearing jeans and wondered if this is a cultural thing covering up or that it's not too hot to wear them????

thanks

Bring everything with you to Switzerland, sometimes assignments drag on. If your child outgrows the clothing by the time you move, then by all means pass them on to some deserving Swiss child. If they still fit, bring them along, ot at least the bigger ones -- kids and adults always need warmer clothes here for: travel (unfortunately sometimes it is unexpected), the movies, ice skating, etc...

I have always had at least one pair of jeans, a sweatshirt, fleece, warm socks, etc... stashed away for the kids and I. Plus, if a friend needs to borrow something -- wee then you're a star.

As far as Singaporeans and expats wearing jeans -- yes it seems impossibly hot, but by the time you are here for a few months you'll acclimate. I wear jeans all the time. It's kind of a rite of passage when you can put that first pair on, run a few errands and not spritz like the Trevi fountain.

Hope this helps.

too hot for jeans?

Culturally it is not a problem not covering your legs, arms etc. Even in mosques, Hindu temples you will not be chased away, although it is considered rude. The only time it may be a *problem* is adhering to the dresscode of certain hoity toity places e.g. 5-star hotel restaurants. That was all for adults. For a BABY it would never be a problem.

As for too hot or not: it is totally subjective. My g/friend is Swiss and I have heaps of friends visiting from Oz, Europe, USA throughout the year. Some just cannot take the humidity, others love the climate & happily traipse about in long pants.

If your baby wants for any clothes, head for Mustapha's (Serangoon Road) a 24-hour shopping bonanza where you can buy anything from saree's tp saffron. Their range of kids clothing is inexpensive and good.

For higher-end stuff, go to Holland Road Shopping Centre, a delightful small shopping mall with lotsa exotic stuff for mum & dad too. There is a shop on the 1st floor just by the staircase with adorable clothes in 100% cotton for little tykes.

Of course there is always Osh Kosh etc in Orchard Road.
