Hi, I just took a job with my company in Singapore, and will probably move in about 2 months. Can anyone help me with the following:
Are TV's/appliances cheap or expensive in Singapore?
What about clothes (should I stock up over here or not worry about it)?
I will be working in the Benoi Sector, is that downtown?
Thanks for your help,
Clint

OK, let me try to give you some answers:
TV's/appliances: of course it depends where you come from but I think prices are OK. If you want cheap items you can always look at garage sales.
Clothes: same as above, but for sure you will not need so many. Weather is warm every day.
Beoi Sector is "far" south west, so definitely not downtown. Not very convenient for transportation. MRT is planned for this sector in 5 years...

If you are from the US, skip bringing the TV's and appliances. TV's won't work, DVD player won't work (wrong region), and you'll need voltage transformers. Costs compared to the US are roughly the same, maybe a few percent higher.
If your're coming from the UK or elsewhere with 240 volts and PAL TV, then maybe you can bring them. It costs a bunch to ship. If the company is shipping, maybe no big deal. OTOH, sell the used stuff, get an allowance out of company for new stuff in lieu of shipping costs. If you're paying the frieght, probably makes more sense to sell the used stuff and buy new. And if and when you go back, you can always sell your used stuff here.

For clothes - buy there if you are of a larger size. Singapore clothes tend to be geared for the petite. however, there are many foriegn branded clothes here as well.

Without knowing where you are moving from, here is a bit of advice on buying clothes in Singapore:
It vascillates between the very expensive and the very cheap, without a lot in between. If you are not the size of a local Singaporean, then you will have some trouble buying clothes here. There are some options to be sure, but the selection will be greater and the fit better in your home country.
I always stock up when I am home and save Singapore for the custom made items and the odds and ends I find here and there. Good Luck.
