Birthday Gift for Maid

Her birthday is Sunday. Any ideas of what would be cool/appreciated?

Tough one. Does she have any hobbies that you could buy an appropriate gift related to something she enjoys?

Failing that, the gift of money is always handy and appreciated and isn't considered crass or thoughtless here in Asia. This way she can put it to use however she deems fit.

I remember my mother mother once buying a pair of small gold ear studs for our maid on Deepavali but coming from you as a man, giving jewellery may seem a tad inappropriate in your case so nix that! Sorry SE, i wish I could be more helpful.

Pre-paid phone card? Movie tickets?

What's her age, hobbies, likings etc?

Make her the center of attention in an outing all together, at a nice dinner?

She's Asian? Money- in a red packet- and a little trinket box or voucher for Tangs/Metro/Robinsons

Hi, maybe two things ...
- Cash, because that is practical
- A small 'thoughtful' gift, to show that you're seeing her as person and not just a paid servant (sorry, that sounded ruder that I meant).

Are there any Tagalog magazines or newpapers available in Singapore? Maybe a year's subscription for her ... (I'm assuming Philippina)

Cheers

Has she been with you a long time? If you'd like to splurge:

DVD player (she can rent Tagalog/English movies at Lucky Plaza)
Cable TV for her room if she doesn't have it
New bed linens & towels for her room
Boom Box

If your relationship is fairly new cash is best, she'll have a great day off with extra money to spend.

She has been with us a long time. Has TV, radio, DVD, cable, and a laptop. Have pretty much decided to settle upon a card, a DVD that she wants, and some cash.

Many thanks to all who responded.

Gift for maid

A red packet with some cash would be most appropriate for them, they can buy whatever they like or save up the money. Otherwise, a gift voucher.

If she's married maybe a phone card, so she can talk with her husband or family, either way I am sure she would appreciate your concern, that distance from her family is also something you think about.
