Childcare

Dear friends

I am going to Singapore soon with my six year old boy. I need your help in childcare.

For a small family like mine, with me working and son schooling everyday, do I need a maid or a part time maid? I do not know the child care service in Singapore. For dealing with school holidays and out of school hours if school finishes very early, what will you recommend, maid, part time maid or domestic helper? My salary is S$5000 a month, with very limited amount of housing subsidy.

Thanks

If you are still thinking about local schooling (saw your other posts  ), then you should be aware that they run only for HALF a day. The kids will go between 7-12 in the morning OR 1-6 in the afternoon. Outside of these hours, there are plenty of places for your wee boy to go. It would be futile to pay for a part timer to look after him, so you may want to think about a full time maid (may have a few other pluses too, like someone to help you get dinner sorted, and your son can come home and relax in his own space etc), as it may be a very long day for him otherwise.

I apologise if I am wrong, but I have just suddenly thought you are a single mum? You may find a maid is a real must-have, especially if you have no family support out here. She will cost approximately $800 month. I think this would be the best option for you. If you find someone you gel with, it will be a really good move, I'm sure.

I live quite near NUS, and housing is very reasonable out here. I don't know if it's standard, but our condo doesn't have maids rooms in the 2 bedroom places, just the 3 Bed apartments. You will need to bear this in mind a bit, when you budget for accomodation.

hi,

I don''t think a maid is necessary as you have only 1 kid. For a listing of childcare available, thry www.mcys.gov.sg. They have a complete list of childcare available in Singapore with detailed information.
