Before you upload the file, it is better for you to resize it using Photoshop or other graphic editors to 64x64 pixel.

I guess your file is not exactly square in dimension. You need to at least crop it to a square dimension to look good in the forum avatar. (Like 100x100, 200x200 pixel)
