Should I live in Orchard or River Valley area?

Post by tatler » Thu, 24 Jun 2004 10:51 am

I have an option to be at Orchard Road or River Valley, these 2 locations seems awesome to me but I am trying to suss out the BIG difference between the 2 locations, and I realised there's the MRT is probably little further for River Valley (nearest being Orchard or Somerset stations), whereas Orchard has its own Orchard station...

Can anyone pick out other big difference between the 2 locations before I decide? thanks!

Should I live in Orchard or River Valley area?

Hi. (1) Both Orchard Rd & River Valley Rd are quite long and it will make a big difference -exactly- where you're going to be staying. You could end up on Orchard but in fact be almost as far from the MRT than if you were on RV.
(2) Orchard is mainly shopping & Hotels, though there are some decent clubs (oh, and some indecent ones), pubs, cinema. Most accommodation is slightly off the main road, say 50metres at best and upto 200/300 metres. (Tell us what country you're from, and we'll give a comparison to your city). RV is generally more residential. It does have pretty reasonable shopping and night life but, in my opinion, it's a bit more spread out rather than the non-stop shops etc. of Orchard. I'd say it's a bit more down-to-earth.
(3) Probably, and this is again just my opinion, you'll get a slightly better/bigger place for the same $$s in RV than you would on Orchard.
(4) Just by-the-by, having been historically a big fan of MRT, I'm slowly being converted to the value of buses. The bus network in Singapore is pretty extensive and I'm starting to downplay the criticality of being near to MRT. (The exception to this is if you're living a long way out, in which case the bus is still a drag compared with MRT. But this doesn't apply to you).
Maybe we can give better advice if we know a little about your circumstances ... age, single/married, party-goer, etc.
Good luck.

RV is growing to be a good food area. You've got Valley Point (where they have a nice Italian rest., video rental, wine shop, Starbucks, laundrymot), Great World City (the best cinema in town, Zara, the usual cafes and good selection of intl food, Cold Storage supermart). I rate RV better value with a better facility as well as lower rent. By the way, you will have to pay more for groceries in town as well! Afterall, you can always take a taxi to town in 5 minutes if you need to do your weekend thingy.

Hi,

Talking about renting an apartment in RV, I do have 1 apartment in RV for rent. It is within walking distance to Great World City where you can take free shuttle bus to Orchard, City Hall and Chinatown. It is also less than 5 mins drive to Orchard. If you are interested in renting the apartment ( 3 rooms - fully aircon with 3 bathroom/ toilets ) for $1400, please pm me or e-mail me at [email protected]

Thanks. :D
